忍 · Endurance

Endurance

nin — “to endure, persevere”

To bear, to persevere, to quietly hold on under what would break others.

What it means

Bearing what cuts.

忍 (nin) means to endure, to persevere, to bear hardship without breaking. Its form is a blade (刃) above a heart (心) — holding steady under what cuts. It is also the character at the root of 忍者 (ninja): one who endures, and conceals.

A close cousin says something a little different:

耐 · tai

To withstand, to hold out against — endurance aimed outward at a force or a condition.

忍 · nin

To endure with inner restraint, to absorb and carry on. Quieter and more personal — the patience to bear.

Watch for

Where it goes wrong.

To many Japanese eyes 忍 also carries a ninja association — striking, but worth choosing on purpose. The 心 radical beneath the blade has to be balanced, or the character looks off. Mirror-reversed from a stencil, or stretched into a slogan, it reads wrong instantly. The character is strong; setting it with care is what keeps it so.

In different scripts

Same meaning, a different hand.

The character carries the meaning; the brush style carries the mood. 忍 in three of the most common scripts:

Kaisho
楷書 · composed
Gyōsho
行書 · flowing
Sōsho
草書 · expressive

Make sure it means what you think.
