愛 · Love

Love

ai — “love, deep affection”

The single most chosen kanji for tattoos — and one of the easiest to get subtly wrong.

What it means

One character, the deepest kind of love.

愛 (ai) is love in its fullest, most enduring sense — the love you commit to: for a partner, a child, a calling. It carries weight and permanence, which is exactly why it reads well on skin. It is not casual fondness, and it is not romance-in-the-moment.

That distinction matters, because the obvious alternatives say something different:

恋 · koi

Romantic love — the thrill of being in love with someone. Lighter, and tied to a specific person, not a lasting principle.

愛 · ai

The committed, enduring love most people actually mean. The right choice for a tattoo about devotion rather than infatuation.

Watch for

Where it goes wrong.

愛 itself is rarely mistranslated — the trouble is everything around it. Stencilled from an image, it gets flipped or mirror-reversed and reads backwards to anyone Japanese. Stretched into a phrase by a translation tool (“my love forever”), it turns into something no one would actually write. And reach for “love” in the romantic sense and you may be handed 恋, which says something narrower than you intend.

The character is simple. Choosing it deliberately, and setting it correctly, is the part worth getting right.

In different scripts

Same meaning, a different hand.

The character carries the meaning; the brush style carries the mood. 愛 in three of the most common scripts:

Kaisho
楷書 · composed
Gyōsho
行書 · flowing
Sōsho
草書 · expressive

Make sure it means what you think.
